The single most important skill for officer safety, effectiveness and career success is interpersonal communication. Concerns in this area are at the forefront of today’s policing challenges. Reducing complaints and other unwanted outcomes are largely matters of communication training and emotional intelligence. No matter a member’s function or rank, poor communication skills cause self-induced jeopardy on multiple fronts.
Our over 30 years of training and consulting with hundreds of agencies and over 700,000 officers taught us the field is a dangerous place to practice this most important skill. This sent us searching for a program worthy of our clients. We found nothing. So, bypassing other well-known verbal-deconfliction programs with catchy titles, we designed a training and assessment system we could recommend to our clients. We brought together the best people in the country to build the most comprehensive communications program in the business.
Our training builds on the framework created by our team-member Dr. Brian Fitch, PhD (LASD Lt, ret.) in his book, Law Enforcement Interpersonal Communication and Conflict Management – The IMPACT Model, developed with Randy Means, who wrote the book’s introduction and helped guide its development. The IMPACT principles are these: Identify and Manage Emotions, Master the Story, Promote Positive Behavior, Achieve Rapport, Control Your Response, and Take perspective. Of course, our project doesn’t just label these competencies, it teaches how to arrive at and deliver them, and uses the nation’s leading experts to do so.

IMPACT Live Training
Category: Live Training: 1-2 day In-Person Training or Live Interactive Webinar
Cost: The cost of live training is $3,500 for a day one and $2,500 for each following consecutive day of training. Doing this training as a live, interactive webinar would reduce the cost to $2,000 per day, period, because it eliminates our travel expenses.
Two days allows more depth and breadth of coverage, more use of video scenarios – or treatment of two groups, like line officers one day and supervisors at all levels the next day.

IMPACT Training: Self-Guided Digital Tutorial
Category: E-Learning – Comprising 30 interactive scenarios-300 plus training junctures!. This product will be delivered via one flash drive for internal, but unlimited use by agency personnel.
Cost: $1,500
30 video scenes, 5-6 junctures each, three officer responses at each juncture, expert analysis and evaluation of nearly 500 officer responses to give users a close look at good, OK, and awful, with explanations.

IMPACT Assessment Instrument
Category: Professional Services – This product is delivered via one flash drive for unlimited use within the purchasing agency.
Cost: $1,500
The IMPACT Project is more than a communication skills trainer, it has also developed a highly sophisticated assessment tool for simulated citizen contact competencies. Similar to video-based firearms training, it creates stress, requires several skill sets to succeed, and each of the 30-scenes necessitate different combinations of interpersonal communication skills. Trainee performance can be captured by purchasing agency for officer review, reflection and skills coaching – or for scored assessment.

With this package, you get both of the above products and allow the highest and best use of the IMPACT Training and Assessment System.
Note: If you would like to receive assessor/coaches live training on how to best utilize these products, which we recommend but do not require, that live training would $3,500 for a one day onsite session, and $2,500 for a second (consecutive) day onsite. One day is adequate but a two-day program allows a deeper dive and more training exercises. Your choice. A live, interactive webinar version of the same training can be purchased for $2,000 per day.
